Heroes on NBC: Flop or Not?

Although 'Heroes' is doing pretty well in the ratings, is it worth watching?

Since it's Sunday, and all there is on is the Baseball playoffs. Meaning no 'Family Guy' or 'The Simpsons' I thought I'd let you all read another one of my articles I wrote for my school newspaper up here at Utah State University. The newspaper is called "The Statesman."

I wrote a review on NBC's new show Heroes. I hope everyone enjoys it for a nice Sunday read.

‘Heroes’ may not be enough to save NBC

HEROES

Hoping to bolster sagging ratings NBC is venturing into the serial drama realm with it’s highly touted ‘Heroes.’ ‘Heroes,’ is one of the most anticipated shows this fall, heck NBC’s been promoting it like mad since June. So, is it worth all the hype?

As you probably guessed-if you’ve seen any of the promos-‘Heroes’ is about people that discover they have “special” powers. A cheerleader in Texas can’t get hurt, a man in New York thinks he can fly, a lonely office worker in Japan is convinced he’s found a way to teleport, and a down and out mother living in Las Vegas seems to have an evil alter ego.

Flying, teleportation, invincibility all super powers right? But, we’ve seen them all before. That’s my problem with ‘Heroes.’ It lacks originality. We’ve already had our fill of super power wielding humans with the likes of ‘X-Men’ and USA Network’s ‘The 4400.’

But, what the show lacks in creativity it makes up in production value. The show itself looks beautiful. They even spent time bringing in some big names for the cast like Ali Larter (‘Final Destination,).

Tim Kring (‘Crossing Jordan’), the show’s creator has said that the show is about how ordinary people deal with their newly found powers. But, the show hints at a huge catastrophe that these people must stop. I find it hard believing that this show can’t inevitably slip into the “save the world” syndrome.

In order for ‘Heroes’ to be a hit, it has to attract more than just a geek/cult following. I for one will give it a few more episodes to see where it’s all going. The advice I would give about ‘Heroes,’ is Tivo it and watch it if you have nothing better to do.

I actually like Heros. I don't like it as much as XMen but then I got tired of 4400 too. I don't know if I will continue to watch it or not but I am taping it to watch later.

Anonymous: I'm also DVR-ing it. I'm interested to see where it goes. These were just my first impressions of the show.

I was happily suprised by Heroes. The Japanese time traveller is my favorite, he's just so happy. It's interesting and will probably keep me the whole season.

Haha. I admit that I lose interest in shows a quarter to half way through the season. Luckily Steve keeps watching them so I'm kinda "forced" to keep up.

melisa: Sometimes it is pretty hard to watch a show through an entire season, and even into multiple seasons. I understand that. It has to be really good for people to do that.

I for one am really liking this show. It's really keeping my interest. What's going to happen? Who knows.

Are you going to do recaps of these episodes?

Anonymous: I'm glad someone cares a little about this show. I was beginning to think no one was really going to comment on this show. Thanks for commenting.

I am going to try and do as many recaps of this show as I can yes. I first need to catch up which I am planning on doing later today, then I can watch the episode that aired last night, and recap up until there.

Heroes came on and my daughter said, "Yuk!" to the cheerleader on the autopsy table, so we had to change it. I hadn't planned on watching it because so many critics said it was derivative, but now you (Aaron) and all these commenters have piqued my interest.

Adele: Well, it is actually pretty derivative. Or not very original. But, it is well done. And it has potential. I'm curious to see where it's going. So hopefully it goes somewhere where X-Men and The 4400 haven't been.
