Lost: "The Glass Ballerina"

LOST
“The Glass Ballerina”
I love the intricacies of the Jin/Sun stories. Sun has a lot deeper personality
Lost glass ballerina
Sun's enterance into deception.
that is being developed than what we’ve known. The show started out showing Sun as a little girl. After a glass ballerina crashes to the floor Sun’s father asks her if she did it. She lies and says the maid did it. Kind of a foreshadowing event that Sun isn’t ever truthful with anyone. The title “The Glass Ballerina,” is a metaphor of Sun’s life. Ever since she was a kid she’s been a liar. Interesting. I had an “Ah-ha” moment during this episode (I love those), well, I guess it was more like a “I knew it,” moment, but oh well. Sun did cheat on Jin. I knew it. I guess we didn’t actually see them doing the hibbity-dibbity, and she did get out of the bed saying “I can’t do this,” but I think she did it. That baby isn’t Jin’s baby I’m calling it right now.
Sayid Jin Sun Lost
Sayid lies his little pants off.
We have Sayid, Jin, and Sun out on Desmond’s sailboat trying to find Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Only they never show up. Sayid comes up with a plan to sail around to another place so Jack can have better view of the signal fire. They find the dock where Jack, Kate, and Sawyer were tied up at the end of last season. At first I was really surprised, and almost pissed at the comments Sayid made about the dock: “It’s overgrown, hasn’t been used in months.” I was thinking, are you serious man? That dock looks brand spanking new! You were in the army, how in the world can you think that dock is never used.
Thank goodness we found out he was lying about all that because he needed the help of Jin to set a trap for The Others when they came to look at what the signal fire was. I admit though that the trap that Sayid sets is very ill conceived, but we’ll get to that later.
Elsewhere on the island, The Others are making Sawyer and Kate do manual labor, for no apparent reason, breaking up rocks, using a wheelbarrow to load them up, and the rolling them about 20 yards away and dumping them. The
Kate Sawyer Lost Evangiline Lilly
Kate slaves away in her dress...get that bug out of there!
Others are sick! Kate is still wearing her dress, man that’s got to be really uncomfortable working in that thing. Also, sleeping in that cage at night on the ground…makes you think Kate is getting bugs in places you don’t want bugs.
Kate Sawyer Kiss Lost
He finally did it...Whoopie!
During the laborious working Sawyer finally gets the “cojones” to walk up and kiss Kate. At first I thought this scene was a tad bit on the cheesy side, but come to find out Sawyer was doing it so he could find out what kinda fight The Others had in them. Are they just pretending? Or do they know how to really handle those guns? Sadly though, Ben Linus (Faux-Henry) was watching on his nifty little TV screens hearing Sawyer talking to Kate about taking them.
Back to the boat. Sawyer and Jin are sitting in a tree…k-i-s-s-i-n…whoops, sorry. They’re both waiting for those stinkin’ Others to show their faces. Sayid’s plan: Capture 2, kill the rest. Sounds like a good plan to me. I’ve really been waiting for someone to kill someone in this show. Sounds morbid I know, but there’s always these points where a person has a chance just to pop a cap in an Other and sadly the relent. Surprisingly no one shows up. This is what I’m talking about ill conceived. Why in the world didn’t Sayid think they’d come in by water? Which they did. Sun came face to face with one of them…and…hooray…Sun shot her right in the gut. Way to go! She couldn’t be talked down, or manipulated. She gave her one to suck on. That was great. I shot my fist in the air when that happened.
Then came the ending. Ben is in with Jack. Jack appears lethargic and mentally beat. Ben then makes him “an offer he can’t refuse,” by telling them that they have contact with the outside world. They know everything that’s going on. Ben (this was quite corny) shows Jack the Red Sox’s winning the world series on a TV screen. Although after I got to thinking about the first season…If you remember the conversation Jack's dad had with Sawyer in the bar, he said "the Red Sox will never win the World Series". Then when Jack repeated it to Sawyer, Sawyer realized that was Jack's father. Ben then tells
Jack Red Sox World Series Lost
The "Babe's
Jack he can send him home if Jack does him a favor. Personally I don’t think Jack will betray anyone, but it would be freaking out of left field if he ended up doing just that. Everyone, always remember that it was always the plan the Jack’s character was actually going to be killed off in the second episode of the series. So, well…he’s expendable.
Next week we find out what happened to Locke, Eko, and Desmond. I’m really, truly excited to see Locke back on his game. You know he’s going to come with a vengeance after finding out the button was actually real. He’s going to be the old Locke we know and love, hopefully he kicks some Other’s ass!

Great post. You know I disagree with you on some points. Everybody disagrees with each other about this show. I'll have another Lost post tomorrow and I'll probably link to your post, if that's okay.

Adele,
Feel free to link away. Link anything you want to your space. Also, I'd like to hear what you disagree with. Friendly discussions about this show are always fun to me.

I as well had one of those I-knew-it moments. I always suspected that Jin understands more English than we were led on to think. I could tell in previous episodes that he seemed to understand people talking. What a great episode! Next week's will be even cooler. I wonder when or if Sun will tell Jin that the kid is not hers. Does anyone think that she will try to abort it?

This was a TERRIBLE episode. The Sun and Jin flashbacks are always the worst ones and it was the same thing here. We learned almost nothing from this episode and that's been a large part of the problem with Lost. The mysteries are great but they take forever to lay them out and when they finally do unload, it's one or two episodes that are jam-packed. Spread the fun out a little or else the numbers will continue to drop like they did during most of season number two. Very nice recap though despite the fact that's all it was. A recap. The author seems to be ignoring the fact that this site is called etvREVIEWER. Some opinions on why you thought this episode was so excellent would have been great because as I said, I was disappointed with this and last week's season premiere.

MR,
Thanks for your comment. But, I have to disagree with you that this was a bad episode. They surely aren't going to answer everything at once, or this show would be over by now.

I'm sorry you didn't feel this was a review. I felt I put in a lot of my own thoughts. But, I also couldn't write etvreviewer/recapper.com, that's just too long of a website. My first blog I put up yesterday spelled out the fact that these will be recaps/reviews.

I never actually said "I thought this was excellent." I did like it however. There are some things I didn't like though. Like Sayid's plan, was stupid. I can't believe he did that. Totally out of character. But, I on the other hand like Sun/Jin stories. There are ones I like better and ones I hate worse. All of Charlie's flashbacks I can completely do without.

Adele above, says she disagreed with me on a few things. It'd be hard to disagree with something if this was only a recap. But, I'm glad you came by MR. Do you have a blog I can find you at?

Man, that Korean girl is hot... that episode in season 1, where she's in a bikini? Blew my mind...

Cibbuano,
Ha, you should've checked out Maxim like last month I think. She was on the cover. I saw it on the newstand. The women of Lost.

Thanks for stopping by.

Celebrity Fox: Thanks. DVR's for the computer are a magnificent thing.

Cathy: What is it you were 'lost' about? Please share your feelings with all of us. I really want to have some good discussions about these shows.

I can't student Jin/Sun episodes - so many subtitles, so detrimental to the storyline when I miss like one or two. What's with Juliet? She seems to flirt with everyone. The Juliet-Ben conflict is pretty interesting though - it seems there was something happening there at one point...

Jimbo: I couldn't agree with you more on the Juliet-Ben conflict going on. It was especially prevelant in the season opener. If I were a betting man (which sometimes I am) I would put my money down that Juliet is going to screw Ben over.

Just remember the season opened up on HER eye. Last season was Desmond's eye and look how important he became. The first season was Jack's eye...which says it all. Juliet is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Ben is going to rue the day...

Okay, Aaron. I linked to your post in my most recent one about Sun. I tried to use the Relate Posts feature, but I can only relate my posts to my own posts. Ah, well.

I disagree with you on the paternity of Sun's baby. I think it is Jin's. I also realize that I am the only person in the known universe who thinks that.

I also disagree that the Sawyer/Kate kiss scene was corny. Not even for a moment did I think that was anything but hot!

Jack is not expendable. Well, I guess anyone is expendable, but the thing about Jack being killed off in the second episode... The producers realized during the pre-season showings that Matthew Fox (who plays Jack) would have a sizable following. This was surprising for an actor who didn't have much beyond "Party of Five" five years earlier.

And, finally, I'm 180 degrees from you on Locke. He's always been a pathetic wannabe who just lucked out on the island and *seemed* to know what he was doing in the eyes of the survivors.

Comment by Aaron

October 13th 2006 02:47
Adele: Well, we do definently disagree on Locke. He's my absolute favorite! He got a bit wussie at the end of Season 2. But, I'm really looking forward to seeing the old Locke. Also, a very unsung Mr. Eko. I love Eko. He's the man. I can't wait to see him again.

And, Desmond. All three of those guys have a lot of stuff to do with the Island. I can't wait to find out what's going to happen with them.

Adele, is there any other TV shows you watch? Also, I read on your blog that thing about reruns until Lost comes back on. Just so you know Lost isn't going to do any reruns this year. When Lost is off the air, they're going to have a new show called Daybreak take it's place until it's back on. Which is a good call on their part I think.

Aaron.

No reruns? That's not a problem. I have them all on DVD.

I saw the ads for Daybreak. I didn't realize it would be in place of Lost. I might check it out.

You wouldn't think I'd have time for other shows with all my obsessing about Lost. I also watch Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactic, Meerkat Manor (Shakespeare died! ), Samurai 7, and I just found a new one that I'm trying out called Rosemary and Thyme. The first season of Life on Mars just ended, so I'm not watching that now, but I would be, if I could. Beyond that, it's a lot of PBS.

This show is consistent! The acting and plot developement remind me of a movie. This season is so more intense than the last. I am hooked! Your review is great. This show is starting to be underappreciated, and it is th eonly GREAT thing happening on ABC. Cannot wait to see Locke and Echo's story next week....DRAMA!

Funny how everyone says Sun as a liar and that's it, end of story. I watched it, thinking she responded as she did (in the child sequence) because of her intimidating father. Doesn't make the lie not a lie, just explained WHY she did it. Then she grew up to marry a man that had the same intimidating and abusive tendencies (how many time does that happen? you gravitate to what's familiar to you...). No wonder she was cheating on him. I saw this episode concerning her, well, most of the island time concerning her as a GIANT step forward for her. The woman is finally breaking free of the life she had lead prior to this - and standing up for herself! Is it a quiet confidence in herself finally coming to light?
That's all just my opinion... guess I may be WAY off base. Time will tell.
I love all the flashbacks into their lives. Some are more exciting then others, that's for sure. But each one has been pretty cool! Can't wait for more about Locke!!

Weimiegirl: Thanks so much for stopping by! You have a very interesting point. And now that I htink about it what you say makes quite a bit of sense.

Sun's father has controlled her whole life, and she's just starting to realize that she can run her whole life. That makes a lot of sense.

So then, if that's the point of her story (and who knows?) what will it mean in the future? We know that she certainly has more guts then imagined by being able to pull the trigger last week! She showed even herself that she can stand strong when its needed. Where will that go in the story?
I forgot to mention Jin - and his ability to understand English after all. Hmmmm, another interesting point!!

Weimiegirl: Yeah I totally agree. Something else to consider is that in the book 'Bad Twin' there was a mention that Piak Industries (Sun's father's company) and the Hanso Foundation have connections.

I loved how Sun actually killed an Other, well we assume she did. We don't know if she's dead yet. I bet she isn't. I hope she is though.

But, next week's episode will be amazing I can feel it.

Aaron-
i am finally making it over here! great site!!!

ok, to lost: what you failed to mention though was Kate talking to Alex (the french lady's daughter) and really, who the heck is Karl? I thought in the past that Alex might be an other, but maybe not. Any thought to the theory that is going around that Kate may have been sexually assulted by Ben or another Other? Because, man, her wrists are really, really banged up.

I kind of think that maybe the Sun's baby is an Others. because didn't she lose some time in the woods at some point? Can't remember which season that was. i did hear the actor that plays Jin alude to in an interview that the baby may or may not be Jin's

Ok, those are my thoughts for now, see you later!

Peace!

Jenna: Thanks for stopping by. Yeah I did forget to mention Alex, I'm sorry about that. My thoughts on her is that she, on the outside appears to be an Other, while really she is not. Because she helped Claire escape in season 2.

I have no idea what to think about that crazy Karl guy that seemed to get loose so fast. That was just wierd. I don't know why Alex was so concerned about him either. It's hard to say at this point.

Also, personally I don't think the baby is Jin's baby, but also not an Other. Because if you remember when Sun was kidnapped it wasn't actually the Others who did the kidnapping, it was Charlie who did it.

Please keep on coming back!

Aaron.
