Steve Irwin on South Park: Funny? Or Offensive?

November 2nd 2006 18:10
Category: TV News
A little while ago South Park aired an episode with a dead Stever Iriwn pictured with a stingray hanging out his chest. I found this YouTube video. Is it funny or offensive? You decide.

I find it offensive. Leave the poor man alone.

I don't mind it so much. Everyone gets lampooned on South Park. Pardon the pun. But I think it's fine. I thought it was quite tasteful, actually.

I don't think it's particularly funny, a tad offensive but not really much of a surprise from South Park. It really could have been a lot worse, and I think it is more about ridculing people like this.

Nina: I personally don't find it offensive, but that's just me. Everyone gets their turn on South Park.

I don't think it's offensive. Sure, it's in bad taste. But considering I was getting joke sms's within 2 days of Steve's death.....there's plenty of people who have bad taste.

I think it's less offensive than some of the other stuff they have on South Park. There's always been jokes around when someone dies. I seem to remember hearing heaps of jokes about Princess Diana's death. I don't think it's in good taste, but it's pretty common.

KylieW: Yea people jump at the chance of making fun of this stuff. But, apparently Steve's producer has come out and said that Steve was really interested in his own fame more than the animals. My opinion it was bound to happen sometime. I just thought it would've been a croc.

historylass: Yea I agree. But, I actually think that the South Park guys were pretty reserved with it. I did laugh I have to confess.

What I find offensive is not the fact that they showed Steve Irwin with the stingray in his chest, but that Satan was dressed up as Britney Spears. That is disturbing.

Lucas: Ha Ha I agree totally with that!

From the perspective of Irwin's family, I would find that offensive and disrespectful.

I dont find it as offensive as the media superspectacle that his death generated - and teh fistfight that occured to get the first exclusive interview with Terri.

TV stations using Irwin's death to gain more ratings is far more offensive than a one-off joke on a satirical cartoon.

The show itself even mentioned how srong it was.

Besides - where is the furor over Princess Diana, or Ghandi who also were featured?

ChrisB, I agree. The way the media carried out after Steve Irwin's death was pretty disgraceful. I used to work in a place that had to write up summaries for what was on television and radio, and I hated it when someone died, because I knew I would be so sick of that person before the end of the week.

ChirsB: Yea it was quite the spectacle I'll give you that. The media will never let up on that sort of thing either.

historylass: WoW! That sounds like a pretty bad job. Were you sick of Irwin, or rather hearing about him?

By the time Steve Irwin died, I wasn't working there any more, so had the opportunity to just switch off the television when it got too much. I've never really been a big fan of Steve Irwin in the first place. I'm sad he died, but I really didn't want to hear about it 24/7. The job was actually pretty cool. When I was working there, I was always up-to-date with current affairs.

There is something very important that South Park taps into which remains unrealized by many. This form of satire is the water that finds the crack. If there is something sacred in society, something taboo no matter what it is South Park will invariably find it and reveal it to be the flim flam it really is. If you believe in sacred and taboo things in society, give South Park a miss. In this particular scene Steve Irwin makes it to hell which is really a big party for all the sinners and tries to get accepted for the guy he really is with no frills. In perception of this the Devil immediately throws him out, “In that case, dude, no costume.” How brilliantly offensive is that.

spain01: I agree with you. South Park is quite brilliant in it's own way. The one where they lampooned Scientology was one of my favorite episodes. Everyone deserves their turn.

There are a million more offensive things going on in the world right now.
It's satire
This is what it's supposed to do

Horribly offensive. The loss of Steve Irwin was blow to America. We are still grieving him. I agree that everyone gets their shot on South Park, I don't have a problem with that. However, post mordem is in poor taste, especially so soon after his death and considering he left behind a family who will never get over their loss.

I don't think it was that offensive. It certainly could have been, but it was pretty tame.

I haven't actually watched the vid (can't watch from work), but it might be interesting to ask why things can't be both funny and offensive. Does the one reaction necessarily interfere with the other?
