TV is Evolving: What's your favorite TV show on DVD?

October 21st 2006 16:42
In my post “TV Is Evolving Before Our Very Eyes,” I mentioned that television really has taken a huge leap from where it was. But, one thing I forgot to mention was how much TV has changed since the mass producing of TV on DVD.

3 or 4 years ago this was practically unheard of, and only in the past 2 years has this new trend really caught on. Personally, I think TV on DVD is one of the greatest inventions ever.

I have quite a few TV seasons on DVD. It all started with 24. 24 was what really got me addicted to TV in the first place. From there it was all over for me, snatching up TV DVDs like there was no tomorrow.

My TV DVD Collection:
24—Season 1, 2, 3, & 4
The 4400—Season 1 & 2
Arrested Development—Season 1
Curb Your Enthusiasm—Season 1
Lost—Season 1
Malcolm in the Middle—Season 1
Criss Angel MINDFREAK—Season 1
The Office (British Version)—Season 1 & 2
The Office (U.S. Version)—Season 1
Reno 911—Season 1, 2, & 3
Seinfeld—Season 1, 2, 3, & 4
The Sopranos—Season 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5
DVD collection TV shows
My TV show DVD collection

So, as you can see I’m pretty obsessed with TV on DVD. What’s better than sitting down and being able to watch 5 episodes of Lost in a row without interruption? So, who else out there is completely infatuated with TV on DVD?

What’s your favorite TV show to watch on DVD?

PS--(If you leave a comment, this isn't a rule, but I just think it would be cool to put up a picture of your favorite TV show on DVD in your comment. Just click on the little message that asks if you want to create a fully formated comment. Again, you don't have to do this, but I just think it'd be really fun).

You left out "Deadwood" which is a masterpiece in the Shakespearean style in 19th Century America

spain01: I've really wanted to check out what Deadwood is all about. I've never been able to though, because the seasons are like 70-80 bucks. But, I've herad great things about it. It looks like it would be a very good show.

wow 5 dudes in one place! that would smell, um, interesting haha. i actually like some of your dvd picks there and i know i have been widely denounced for expressing this view by friends but i like the u.s. version of the office more than the british one. not suggesting for one moment that the british one is bad.

this weekend while suffering from an binge drinking induced resting period i have been watching that 70's show on dvd. i am one of the rare australians that actually likes this show, also been watching astroboy too - the 80s version.

Stanley: Yeah I understand there's a lot of The Office purists out there, but I do agree with you. The British one isn't bad by any means, but I do like where the American version of it has gone.

That 70's Show huh? Well I've never been a big fan of the show. But, I do love Topher Grace.

Here I'll put the picture up for you Stanley. Because I have nothing else to do...lol.

Despite my love of TV, the only shows I have on DVD are Seasons 4 & 5 of The Simpsons and Season 3 of Futurama. I love them because they're so rewatchable. The commentaries, particulary the Futurama ones, are fantastic as well.

A friend of my brother is absolutely obsessed with DVD boxsets, and has a huge selection. Generally when I do want to catch up on some great television, I just borrow his. He let me borrow four seasons of Alias DVDs and keep them for about 6 months!

Nina: Yeah rewacthabiliy (is that even a word? If it isn't i just coined it) is a huge thing with TV on DVD. I find myself watching my roommate's Family Guy seasons over and over.

I would love Futurama too.

Unfortunetly just after I bought the Futurama Season 3 DVD they released a box set of all the seasons! I wish I had bought that instead, because I can't justify spending all that money buying the other three Futurama seasons...

Nina: You can get them pretty cheap on Amazon.com.

Season 1--$17.99
Season 2--$19.99
Season 4--$24.99

Amazon is the best place to buy TV seasons on DVD. They always have a bunch of people selling them, so prices are rock bottom.
Also, check Ebay. But, I buy all my stuff from Amazon.

Arrested Development! I've been raving about this show since it was first aired, but it's a sleeper. My sister and besty are new converts. Season One was great, Season Two a bit up and down and Season Three was tired. I'm glad it's over.

Who do you find more creepy - Tobias, Gob or Buster? The obvious choice is always Tobias, but the more I watch, the more I'm tending towards Gob and Buster.

Family favourite - Futurama.

1st. American Dad and Arrested Development
2nd. Lost and Family Guy.

I'd be bouncing off the walls if I could get the "Nowhere Man" series on DVD in Australia, but as yet, and probably forever, there's no distributor for it to be made. =(

I am addicted to TV on DVD. As you can see by my DVD collection I have plenty of titles to choose from - and these are just my TV series. I have a bit of a thing for kung fu as well and own quite a bit of this genre. But I digress. I love Buffy and Angel and own them all. I also love and own Scrubs and Arrested Development, The Family Guy, Absolutely Fabulous, The Shield and Alias. As far as other series go, I belong to a fabulous DVD service that sends my DVDs to my door and have watched Lost - currently about to start series 2 - Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Spooks, 24. I've heard of The Tick but have never seen it, same goes for Deadwood. I'll add them to my list and hopefully will get to see them in the next few years. There are so many fabulous movies and series to watch it's sometimes difficult to choose which ones I want to watch first.

i'd agree, it is getting to the point that i don't watch some tv serious and just wait to watch them on dvd, because i prefer to not deal with the commercials, and waiting week to week. ( take lost for example.) also there are just some shows that i really like to own, such as the office, becuase you can watch them over and over agian and still get entertainment value out of them.

Hi all...

I have 'Buffy' and 'Angel' (both box sets all seasons), 'The Bionic Woman' season 1 and 'Wonder Woman' (all 3 seasons).

Am desperately waiting for the complete collection Twin Peaks box set and intend to collect as many American sixties and seventies shows as possible! Hawaii 5-O, Police Woman, The Man From UNCLE, The Girl From UNCLE (it's true, her name was April Dancer!)... also want 'Alias' and 'Dark Angel'...then there's 'Sex and the City'...it was funny alright!!...and 'Stargate SG1' before Jack left...then there's....ohh too many...

Ok, well we don't have much TV stuff on DVD in our house - most of our DVD's belong to the kids, but I can now say I have one all of my very own, given to me just 3 days ago. "The Chaser's War on Everything."

The only other TV series on DVD in the house so far belongs to the kids - "Bewitched".

No, you won't have heard of the other one, it's all Australian - you can have a look here for some Chaser info and I think they podcast as well if you wanted to see some actual footage.

But the front page of the website alone will tell you what sort of material it is.

Great choices, Aaron. The ones I've got are:

Family Guy - Seasons 1, 2
The Shield - Season 1
Wildboyz - Seasons 1, 2
Buffy - Season 3 (yes, I'm weird)
The Shield - Season 1
Scrubs - Seasons 1, 2, 3
The X-Files - Seasons 1, 2
24 - Seasons 1, 2, 3
Band of Brothers (not sure if this qualifies as a TV show)

Getting all the seasons for a show is quite painful for my wallet. That's the reason why I'm stuck (for now) on the first seasons.

Damn this post!

I've just gone out and ordered Alias 4 and Arrested Development 3.

Also checked out Nip / Tuck, which I'd forgotten to mention as being a very entertaining series, Horatio Hornblower and the Gilmore Girls (which is really twee, but I do love it.) Pleased to report that I resisted the temptation.

And JohnDoe, thanks for mentioning the Muppet Show. I have that and didn't think of it. And I was looking at the picture of my DVDs and was horrified I forgot to mention Fame.

(And I just want to point out that if you look closely in the top left hand corner of my photo, you'll see a Glory in September DVD. Go Swannies. And apologies to all of you who aren't from Australia.)

The five season boxed set for 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'. TV Land edits AND speeds up the episodes to fit in more commercials.

The same goes for 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and many other sitcoms I ahve in my collection. (Gonna need a bigger bookcase!)

My friend Mary Cadorette shows up in the first episode of 'Murphy Brown' as the very first secretary and her appearance setst that long-running gag in motion. But you'd never know it from watching the show in syndication - cut out! So I got the boxed set for the first season of that as well. (Sadly, it doesn't look like we'll get the full run of that series due to poor sales.)

All Deadwood, all the time. Most addictive show I've ever seen, though one has to take care not to pick up the speech patterns or vocabulary.

We watched the season one and two dvd's first from Netflix, then caught season three on OnDemand. Just when we finished the first season for the second time on Netflix, my husband tripped over a pristine used set of the second season at Gamestop for only $40. Needless to say we'll be keeping an eye out for season one at the same place.

Unfortunately, season three is no longer on OnDemand, and not yet available on dvd, so we're both going through Deadwood withdrawal.

Comment by Aaron

October 27th 2006 01:46
Anonymous: They ended Deadwood right? Did they ever conclude everything? I don't watch Deadwood at all so I don't know. It looks rather good though. Like I said, the sets are always so expensive so I don't even try. I spend my money on The Sopranos. Love that show.
