TV on DVD, better than the real thing?

September 26th 2008 04:55

Has the introduction of TV on DVD killed original scheduled television?

Ever since the introduction of TV series on DVD it has intrigued me as to why we even bother watching TV in its original form at all. With all the ad breaks interrupting the story line, having to wait a week in between viewings and the constant schedule changes, it proves that watching all your favourite shows on DVD is much easier.

As I am writing this article I am watching Veronica Mars season 2, a show which despite its popularity suffered from major scheduling issues. The first season aired consistently but the second and third were left in the cold, being screened in the early hours of the morning. It then suffered an even worse fate by being put on TEN HD, which is the unofficial graveyard for TV shows that don’t make it in the Australian market.

This series is a perfect example of how it is much easier to watch shows on DVD than to struggle with the random nature of the free to air television market. Being able to watch a series uninterrupted and when and where you want is a huge factor in why TV on DVD has proven so popular. DVD gives complete freedom to the viewer.

And this is evidently why DVD sales are huge especially when it comes to TV. And surprisingly the TV shows which get the best sales are the ones that aren’t screened here or are treated horribly by the Australian networks. Some examples of the most popular shows on DVD include Battlestar Galactica, Scrubs and One Tree Hill, just to name a few.

TV shows being available on DVD has changed the way we watch TV. We can now watch whatever show we want and don’t have to rely on the networks to tell us when to watch it.

It’s only a matter of time before scheduled TV is obsolete, we now live in a very different world where we want everything the way we want it, when we want it. DVD gives us that opportunity.

I know many people who won't watch a TV show, like 24, Lost. or Prison Break, because they do not want to sit through commercials or wait a week till the nest episode. I think that TV shows on DVD have had a much bigger impact on ratings that pirating has.
