Farscape was a sci-fi epic television series that ran from 1999 to 2003. The series is about an astronaut, named John Crichton, who gets sucked into a wormhole and gets transported to another universe. Chricton and his spaceship (Farscape) get recovered by the crew of Moya, a living ship on the run from a military organisation known as the peacekeepers.
The show spanned four series and chronicled the adventures of Crichton and the crew. The series was made in Australia, but received worldwide accreditation, especially among US viewers.
Season four ended on a cliff hanger where Crichton and his love interest, Aeryn, finally decided to get married and were having a baby. A peacekeeper ship then emerges and shoots them, causing them to get frozen in time. It was quite a dramatic occurrence in the series and this is were the season was left for the year. Fans were left drooling for the return and could not imagine how they were going to get out of this situation.
But sadly this is where it was left. In September 2002, the Sci-fi channel decided to not renew the show for a fifth season due to the fact that the show was too expensive to create. Especially after ratings had slightly declined in the fourth season.
This causes mass outrage in the Sci-fi community and multiple online resistance groups were formed. Due to this undying support, the show was offered financial backing in Europe, and was able to in turn create a four hour mini-series to wrap up the series un-finished plot lines.
This was applauded by fans of the show which by now had received an even larger audience due to the DVD distribution of the series.
There are now plans underway for the production of a series of webisodes to air in 2009 and also a comic book which will be released in November 2008.
